I remember there were quite a few eyebrows lifted when Father Provincial Father Juan chose Blessed Mary of the Incarnation as the last name for our novice Brother Emmanuel.
Blessed Mary, or as she is better known Madame Acarie, is not one of the well known Carmelite Saints in this part of the world. And yet Marie of the Incarnation(1 February 1566 – 18 April 1618), was the foundress of the nuns of the Discalced Carmelite Order in France, who later herself became a lay sister of the Order. She has been called the “Mother of Carmel in France.” She was supposed to be very pretty also.
Now we have the opportunity to know her better. The French Carmelites are holding an online retreat with the theme “Mystic and woman of action, faith in the impossible.”
