The Carmelites have been present in Malta at least since 1418! Six hundred years…
There were various friars and religious that were renowned for their sanctity. Among these is Fr Avertan Fenech whose case for Beatification is currently underway. We also find many learned friars. Among these is the poet of Our Lady, Fr Anastasio Cuschieri.
Today the Calced Carmelites serve 4 parishes, the Priory of Mdina and the old Santa Venera Priory, the ‘Lunzjata’ retreat house in the limits of Rabat, in addition to their mission in Bolivia where they have been for several years.
As part of the celebrations commemorating this anniversary, on the July 16th the two Carmelite families (Discalced and Calced) joined to celebrate the Solemn Commemoration of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Carmel in Valletta. This celebration was led by Father Fernando Millán Romeral, Prior General of the Carmelite Order. In the photo below, we see some of our Fathers together with Father Fernando.
