Yesterday, Sunday July 15th, our Fathers held the only public procession that the ‘Terezjani’ hold in Malta on the occasion the Solemnity of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. This was held in B’kara.
This is a yearly event that still attracts a considerable number of people. Mount Carmel is referred to several times throughout Sacred Scripture. It was on Mount Carmel that Elijah defended the purity of Israel’s faith in the living God. Mount Carmel is celebrated throughout the Old Testament for its verdant beauty. In the twelfth century, hermits withdrew to that mountain and later founded the Order of Carmelites, which is devoted to the contemplative life under the patronage of Mary, the holy Mother of God. Our Fathers have been officiating in B’kara since 1896. It was later agreed to build a bigger church next to the old one. Construction on the ferro-concrete Sanctuary dedicated to the Little Flower began in 1965 and was completed in 1982. This rotunda is among the largest churches in Malta and its awesome architectural design deserves special mention.
